Mexico is our destination of the month. With its massive coastlines, colonial cities, ancient flavors, and world-class spirits. From the sapphire waters of the Riviera Maya to the artisanal mezcalerias of Oaxaca and the chef-driven dining rooms of Mexico City, this is a destination that has something for everyone.
The Pacific side of Mexico offers two very different flavors of paradise. Puerto Vallarta, with its cobblestone Zona Romántica, lively food markets, and buzzing restaurant scene, is a sophisticated playground that blends resort luxury with genuine Mexican character. Seafood tostadas, birria tacos, and craft cocktails with Jalisco tequila define the dining culture here.
Further south, the Oaxacan coast is anchored by Huatulco and the bohemian enclave of Mazunte, offers a quieter, more indigenous-rooted experience. This is the heartland of mezcal, and the food culture here is extraordinary: black mole simmered for days, tlayudas loaded with local cheese, and freshly caught fish prepared over open coals. Don't forget to do a sunset sail with a private catamaran along Banderas Bay at golden hour, cocktails onboard, dolphins common, spectacular Sierra Madre backdrop.
The Caribbean side is Mexico at its most cinematic with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Tulum has evolved into a global food destination, with chefs applying wood-fire techniques and local ingredients to menus that draw foodies from around the world.
Mérida, the elegant capital of Yucatán, is a culinary revelation in its own right. Cochinita pibil, slow-roasted pork wrapped in banana leaves, is the dish you'll dream about for years. Pair it with a locally made henequen-based spirit or a glass of Xtabentún, the region's floral anise liqueur, and you've experienced something truly irreplaceable. For a little adventure go ceenote swimming on the Yucatán Peninsula through a vast network of underground rivers. Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos near Tulum offer some of the world's most ethereal swim experiences.
Mexico City is in the conversation with many other cities as a global dining capital, and for good reason. The city is home to multiple restaurants on the World's 50 Best list, including the legendary Pujol and Quintonil, where chefs are reinterpreting ancient Mexican flavors through a modern lens. But the street food is equally world-class: tacos al pastor, tamales at dawn, and churros dipped in dark chocolate are part of the city's daily ritual.
Beyond the restaurants, Mexico City rewards cultural exploration: the murals of Diego Rivera in Bellas Artes, the floating gardens of Xochimilco (perfect for a festive trajinera boat experience with drinks and local snacks), and the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods, the city's bohemian heart, lined with sidewalk cafés, natural wine bars, and independent bookshops.
The Tequila Trail (officially La Ruta del Tequila) winds through the blue agave landscape of Jalisco State, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey typically begins in Guadalajara (Mexico's second city and a remarkable food destination in its own right) and leads west through the agave-blanketed hillsides to the town of Tequila itself, where family-owned distilleries have been producing the spirit for generations.
Mexico is remarkably well-connected from the United States, with nonstop options from most major hubs to every major destination in Mexico. No visa required for U.S. citizens, just a valid passport is all you need. Mexico issues a tourist card (FMM) on arrival, typically valid for 180 days.
Getting around in-country: Domestic flights are affordable and efficient for covering long distances. ADO buses are excellent for the Yucatán Peninsula. For the Tequila Trail, private driver or the Tequila Express train from Guadalajara are the most curated options.
Mexico City navigation: The Metro is cheap and surprisingly easy to use. For food and wine neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa, ride-shares (Uber works well) and walking are your best tools.
There has been some recent travel disruptions for Mexico travelers, therefore travel insurance is strongly recommended, TMD can connect you with trusted providers as part of your booking.
